Being “techy” I love the possibilities of AI (artificial intelligence) in managing routine tasks. What troubles me is the notion that AI can be creative – and by that I mean spontaneously and authentically creative. AI art, for instance, can produce technically astonishing art but without any sense of felt connection to the result. Art at its best – music, poetry, painting – has the capacity to be rebellious and to go outside the realm of the “usual”. AI seems to me to be rules-based – it creates nothing outside of the algorithm; it possesses no innate urge to explore. In this it becomes a passive reproducer of things rather than a unique voice. As it stands, AI art is simply a sanitised amalgamation of everything that exists resulting in art becoming an endless parody of itself. It is the very essence of conformity.
